The Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute 

logoThe Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) of the University of Maryland is the State's comprehensive training and education system for emergency services. The Institute plans, researches, develop, and delivers quality programs to enhance the ability of emergency services providers to protect life, the environment, and property. MFRI is the State's fire and emergency service training agency.

The Institute has more than 80 years of experience in providing training to protect the citizens of Maryland. Over four hundred certified instructors serving as part-time faculty support more than fifty full-time faculty and staff members. MFRI programs rely on the knowledge and resources of the University of' Maryland system to obtain service and assistance to serve you. The University of Maryland is a not-for-profit governmental agency of the State of Maryland.

The MFRI organization is comprised of six sections, working together to deliver services to a wide variety of customers. The Administrative Services Section is responsible for a variety of activities which provide a solid base of' support to the overall mission of the Institute. The Advanced Life Support Section delivers ALS refresher training programs throughout Maryland. Field Operations is responsible for the delivery of training programs throughout regions of Maryland. The Institute Development Section is constantly providing new and revised teaching programs to reflect the current dynamics within the emergency services. The Logistical Support Section is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the training centers, equipment, vehicles, and props. The Special Programs Section provides consulting and training services to industry and government in safety, regulatory compliance, and emergency response. The Technology and Certification Section maintains the technology resources of the Institute as well as overseeing the day to day operation of the Maryland Voluntary Fire Service Certification System.

It is the goal of all personnel at MFRI to improve upon the past and strive to be the best state emergency services training agency in the nation. The support of customers is extremely valuable and MFRI looks forward to working with you in the future.

MFRI prides itself in its ability to present courses which meet our customer's needs, whether it is accomplished through site specific, mobile training at a customer's facility, or at any one of MFRI's training centers throughout the State of Maryland. The College Park Headquarters training facility and the five Regional Training Centers all have classroom and live fire-training facilities. Each training center has assorted props and equipment necessary to conduct courses such as confined space training, hazardous materials training, forcible entry training, and fall protection training among others.



Advanced Life Support Program:

The Advanced Life Support Program is responsible for the Institute's development and delivery of continuing education. Programs are presented addressing the continuing education needs of Maryland's advanced life support providers.

Field Operations:

The Field Operations is responsible for implementing and delivering programs in the field. Regional offices are located throughout the state to coordinate this delivery. They include Western Maryland, North Central, North East, Upper Shore, Lower Shore, and Southern Maryland. In addition to the offices, training centers with facilities to perform evolutions in structural fire fighting and special fire fighting activities are located at Western Maryland, North East, Southern Maryland, Upper Eastern Shore and the Lower Shore.

Technology and Certification:

Field Operations serves as the administrative arm for the Maryland Fire Service Professional Qualifications Board. All certifications as well as the data repository of the Maryland Voluntary Fire Service Certification System are produced and maintained here.


Administrative Support:

The Administrative Services Section (ADS) is responsible for the administrative support of all MFRI sections including marketing of trade materials, graphic design, payroll and benefits, personnel actions, travel expenses, purchasing, budget reporting, grant accounting, front desk duties and support, invoicing, merchandise sales, and printing of textbook materials. This section is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state law and University and Institute policy.  A manager of this section supervises the efforts of each of the staff as they support visitors, students, instructors, faculty and staff.

Institute Development:

The Institute Development Section (IDS) is responsible for development and revision of all MFRI programs. This section is also responsible for providing professional development opportunities to full-and part-time personnel. A manager of this section supervises the program and curriculum specialists.

Logistical Support:

The Logistical Support Section (LSS) coordinates the Institute's resources including facilities, vehicles, and operations of the Headquarters facility in College Park. The Section is responsible for Environmental Protection Agency, and Occupational Safety and Health Agency regulatory compliance for the Institute. The section coordinates the maintenance and repair of the College Park Training facility and the Regional Training Centers. The LSS operation includes fleet management for more than fifty vehicles supporting the Institute's activities. A manager supervises this section, which include staff in scheduling, vehicle mechanical maintenance, respiratory protection, facility and prop construction and maintenance, and student workers.

Special Programs:

The Special Programs Section offers programs to business, industry, and government in safety and health, regulatory compliance, and loss prevention and control. The Special Programs Section (SPS) is a self-supporting section of the Institute, responsible for consulting and training services offered to private industry, government, and the emergency services community.
